Attending Christmas Party and Eating Christmas Cake

NOTE: It should be noted that the below answer is the English translation of the Fatwa issued by Jamia Uloom Islamia Allama Yusuf Banuri Town, Karachi, Pakistan.

Question

I want to know that at the Christmas celebrations in our office we are also invited and offered a Christmas cake. should we attend the celebration and eat the cake?

Answer

Participation in the religious gatherings and festivals of non-Muslims or holding their festivals & ceremonies or congratulating and giving them gifts is expressing love and affection for them and showing likeness for their religion. This is illegal and forbidden by Shari’ah of Islam therefore it’s not permissible to attend a Christmas party, and eat a Christmas cake.

However, if there is a strong compulsion or fear of trouble and if the thing itself contains halal ingredients (such as sweets, cakes, etc.) then it is permissible to take it, and it will not be haraam for you but it is still better not to eat it and give it to a needy afterward.

The answer is in Fataawa Mahmodiyah:
